Malaysia-Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) has reinforced its status as a leading university in the ASEAN region by organizing an international community service event in Perlis, Malaysia. This initiative is part of Unusa’s commitment to contribute not only within Indonesia but also across ASEAN countries. The international community service is conducted in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Perlis and the Perlis State Education Department, Ministry of Education Malaysia, at Sekolah Kebangsaan Guar Jentik. Representatives from several other schools, including Sekolah Kebangsaan Islam 1, Sekolah Kebangsaan Paya, and Sekolah Kebangsaan Kubang Gajah, also attends the event on July 29th, 2024.

This community service focuses on education and training about the importance of clean water for human health and the significance of environmental conservation from an early age. During the event, school students are educated about the impact of clean water on health and receive practical training on monitoring and measuring water quality around their schools. This initiative aims to foster early awareness and concern about the importance of maintaining clean water and the environment.

Safuandy Sabri, Headmaster of Sekolah Kebangsaan Guar Jentik, expresses his appreciation to UNUSA and all parties involved in this event. “We are very grateful for the educational program provided regarding the importance of clean water for human health and the importance of participating in environmental conservation from an early age. This is a significant international program and the first of its kind held at Sekolah Kebangsaan Guar Jentik. We hope this program can continue in the coming years,” said Safuandy Sabri.

Achmad Syafiuddin, Ph.D., Chair of Unusa’s International Community Service, emphasizes that this activity is part of Unusa’s commitment to contribute at the ASEAN level. “We not only focus on Indonesia but also strive to have a positive impact in ASEAN countries. This activity has a significant impact, especially in raising awareness and concern about clean water from an early age, starting from elementary school,” he stated at the Unusa Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) office on Wednesday (08/07).

Collaboration partner from Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Dr. Farrah Aini Dahalan, states that this collaboration is an implementation of the partnership between Unusa and UniMap established since 2022. “This cooperation demonstrates the importance of cross-country collaboration in enhancing the quality of education and environmental awareness among students,” said Dr. Farrah Aini Dahalan.

Nor Halmey Hamdah, Deputy Headmaster of Sekolah Kebangsaan Guar Jentik, also highlightes the program’s benefits for students. “Through this program, scientists from several Universities come to schools to provide technical understanding that can be beneficial in shaping future scientists,” expressed Nor Halmey Hamdah.

With this international community service, Unusa showcases its dedication in advancing education and environmental awareness in the ASEAN region. This program not only provides education and practical training for students but also strengthens international cooperation between educational institutions in Indonesia and Malaysia.
