Surabaya – Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) celebrated its 11th anniversary with distinguished guests from the U.S. and Japan Consulate General in Surabaya. The U.S. Consulate was represented by Ms. Kayla M. Smith, Deputy Head of Public Relations, while the Japanese Consulate was graced by the presence of Consul Mr. Takeyama Kenichi.

In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, Unusa declared its commitment to becoming a plastic-free campus. As a university affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama (PTNU), Unusa is dedicated to environmental preservation, aligning with the NU Centennial tagline, ” Merawat Jagad, Membangun Peradaban”

“Indonesia is the second-largest producer of plastic waste in the world. No matter how small, Unusa’s concrete commitment is to be free from plastic waste,” stated Unusa Rector Prof. Achmad Jazidie.

To achieve this goal, Unusa will eliminate the use of plastic water bottles. Instead, the campus will provide refillable water stations at various locations across campuses A, B, and C.

“We will place refill stations at strategic points. Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to bring their own tumblers and refill water from the provided stations,” said Prof. Jazidie.

Additionally, Prof. Jazidie announced that Unusa plans to produce its own potable water in the near future. As an initial step, the university will implement the plastic-free program by discontinuing the use of plastic bottles.

“The university is committed to providing facilities. Before we produce our own drinking water, we will ensure access to drinking water through the provision of refill stations across campus,” added Prof. Jazidie.
