Surabaya – On Thursday, August 29, 2024, the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery aof Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) organized “Outdoor Learning: Basic Life Support.” The event is attended by four students from Naresuan University, Thailand, along with three international students from Unusa from Timor-Leste, and one from the Philippines.
The initiative focuses on recognizing life-threatening emergencies related to airway, breathing, and circulation (ABC), which, if left untreated, could result in death. Such ABC emergencies may occur due to various conditions like trauma, illness, fainting, airway obstruction caused by foreign objects, blood, or vomit, as well as chest injuries or respiratory arrest due to other illnesses. Notably, cardiac and circulatory issues are the leading causes of sudden death, accounting for 60%, often triggered by cardiac arrest or circulatory failure.
Held at Surabaya Zoo, the program aims to equip participants with the ability to promptly identify life-threatening emergencies, deliver high-quality chest compressions, provide appropriate ventilation, and utilize an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) at the earliest opportunity. Students has the chance to practice chest compressions hands-on during the event. Additionally, students from Naresuan University are involved in a sharing session, discussing the knowledge and training they has received in basic life support.
“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to participate in this program. It is an eye-opening experience to learn and practice basic life support in such a hands-on way. The sharing session with students from different countries enriched my understanding and allowed us to exchange valuable knowledge,” said Shernalyn from the Philippines.
This hands-on approach enables participants to develop essential skills in life-saving interventions, preparing them to act swiftly and effectively in real emergency situations.
