Surabaya – Environmental issue becomes a global problem that every country and human being are facing. Network of Woman Action to Save the Earth or Nowaste Surabaya as community concern in environmental issues held “Youth Environmental and Education Talks 2022” collaboration with Global Engagement of Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Genus), Saturday (23/4). This event is held to understand environmental problems and explore the world through education. The first speaker Abiyyu Armijn a double degree environmental student in Institut Teknologi Surabaya (ITS) and Universitas Airlangga Surabaya discuss the challenging studying environment at two different universities. The second speaker Zhiella Octabriani the alumni of Awardee IISMA Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia 2021 discusses how to win IISMA Scholarship and the last Aeshnina Azzahra Aqilani an environmental activist Captain River Warrior discusses environment policy in Indonesia.
Youth Environmental and Education Talks 2022 is held in BG Junction Multifunction Hall, Surabaya with participants of more than 30 people.
Fida from Rumah Baca community Malang told how people around her house like to burn waste every day. This activity impacts her and her family suffers from hormonal disturbances. This becomes the health effects of burning plastic waste.
“The plastic life cycle pollutes the environment and accelerates climate change. Plastics are made from petroleum which is added with harmful chemicals that disrupt hormones such as BPA, benzene, and phthalates which cause infertility in babies born with premature puberty defects, etc., especially if the plastic waste is burned, hope we can solve this problem” Fida said.
Genus as International Office Affairs will always support the activities concerned with the environment since it is not the first time Genus held environmental activities. This becomes one of the movements of Genus to take a part in decreasing the impact of environmental issues.
“This is not the first time Genus held environmental activities, last year Genus held beach cleaning and international guest lecture discussed climate change. This becomes one of the movements of Genus to take a part in decreasing the impact of environmental issues” Naufal said as the General Chief of Genus’ Volunteer. (nrl/admin)
